Girls like being called sexy now: Bipasha Basu

Girls like being called sexy now: Bipasha Basu

The sexiest lady in Asia, Bipasha Basu, is famed for getting framed as 'Sex bomb' in many of her films.

But her character in "Race" has set a new milestone in her career in which she is portraying a model, who has the confidence to win any heart with her graceful beauty.

Q.: What's the secret behind your beautiful hairstyle?
A.: Oh, actually I get bored with my same look all the time. In my school I had many friends who had small hairs tucked under beautiful hair-bands.

But I couldn't keep my hairs short as my mother was completely against that style. And despite my wish I had to keep two ponytails. I am having fun avenging those days now and my mother cannot do anything apart from screaming at me.

Q.: How was the experience of working with other heroines?
A.: I don't know why I am asked the same question every time. Let me tell you that my race is not against the heroines, but the heroes.

Audience has been praising my characters in all my multi-starrer films even if I have had very little screen presence. I always try to act at my level best. And I am happy that all my co-stars, including heroes, also work very hard.

Until and unless all the characters in a film are portrayed equally good, the film will never work.

Q.: You mean you didn't have a fight with any heroine?
A.: Please, at least you stop talking like that. Heroes create more problems than heroines.

It's actually our problem that we always support heroes. We always try to find out problems with ladies even if the problem is with guys.

I am proud that I am not like others who defame their own strata. I always like to support women. As far as Katrina and Sameera are concerned, you won't believe that we go together everywhere.

Q.: What's the reason of working in less number of films? Do you want to stabilize your job portal?
A.: There is nothing like bad or good in it. I like them all, but it's is not necessary that people to like them.

I don't feel to work everyday. I worked everyday during the first three years of my career. As a result I couldn't have time for my family and became sick.

I couldn't balance my days properly. But after that I spent my time very well. During all those years, I learnt a lot and have become quite matured.

Q.: What did you think before accepting your negative character in "Ajnabi" as well as in "Race"?
A.: People thought I had gone crazy as I took the negative character in "Ajnabi". That time I was really bored with my modeling and wanted a change.

"Ajnabi" offered me the character which was considered as really bold in Bollywood. People think that taking up a negative character at the beginning of a career is like committing suicide. But I didn't have any idea of becoming a heroine in this industry.

So I took it for a change only. But looking at audience going gaga over my character and having "Raaz" as a hit, I gave the matter a second thought.

Now I guess in real life I am not basically negative and thus I feel attracted towards those kind of characters. Accepting "Jism" had the same reason. I always take it as a challenge.

Q.: How is it possible for you to act like something which you don't feel?
A.: All the credit goes to the directors. And the actor hidden in me also deserves the same. I never wanted to become an actor. But entering the zone, I felt that there is something that drives me to do better all the time.

Today I see people entering the industry with all possible training for acting. But I think actors cannot be made. We all have better actors inside and all we have to do is to get that actor out at the right time.

Q.: You attained a sexy image after "Jism". Are you trying to break away from that image with films like "Corporate", "Apharan" and the very recent "Pankh"?
A.: First thing first, I attained my sexy image since "Ajnabi". And I never tried to change that image. Actually I like to portray different characters and when I get the chance, I never want to let it go.

Q.: You always have portrayed self-confident ladies very well. Do you choose characters or characters choose you?
A.: There is nothing like that. I have done several worthless films, too. And there you won't find me self-confident from any possible angle.

You may recap films like "Barsaat" and "Humko Diwana Kar Gaye" which you can count in that list. And I guess now you can understand that I also attempt blunders.

Q.: Is it true that you have restrained yourself from item numbers after "Billo rani"?
A.: Firstly, somebody please help me understand what an item number is. There was a time when people considered looking sexy as doing something heinous. But now people like when being called sexy.

In the same way, item number also was something derogative in the beginning, but today's scenario is completely changed after getting a touch of King Khan.

And I have never thought of going away from item numbers. If some good banners offer me chances to tap toes on some good music, then I don't have any problem filming myself in it.

Q.: What would you like to say about the making of "Raaz 2"?
A.: It's now been for last one year that the film is under preparation and every now and then, I am asked the same question. I cannot say yes or no on it as I don't have any offer from the makers. I guess Mukesh Bhatt will be a better person to talk about that.

Q.: Please tell us about Raza Mallal's film "Quick Sip A Bride".
A.: I still don't know much about the project. But I will surely know about that very soon. For the time being I can tell you it's a British Production House movie and they will release the film worldwide.

Q.: Please tell us about your forthcoming films including "Mister Fraud" and "Pankh".
A.: I feel bad thinking about "Mister Fraud". It's a good movie but it's still not getting released. It's not slapstick but rather a situational comedy. This is the first comedy which I enjoyed working on.

I guess Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt will help completing the film. "Pankh" is an arty by Sanjay Gupta. I am playing an alter ego of a boy who becomes an actor with my inspiration.

My character in the film is imaginative. Apart from them I am acting in a Yash Raj film with Ranbeer Kapoor. It's a romantic comedy directed by Siddharth Anand. - Rajnee Gupta

Shilpa: To Kiss twice or thrice?

Paris suddenly seems to have become a haunting ground of sorts for Bollywood. Sanjay Leela Bhansali whose opera Padmavati goes on stage this week is currently enjoying a Parisian spring in his life.

If all had gone well Priyanka Chopra would have been in Paris for the Fashion Week shooting for Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion which drew to a close earlier this week.

On Sunday our own Shilpa Shetty shimmered in Paris as she represented Louis Vuitton for a show put up by American designer Mark Jacobs.

Shilpa occupied the front row with other celebrity representatives for the legendary brand including filmmaker Sofia Coppola, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and American burlesque star Dita Von Teese.

"I've been closely associated with this brand for some time now.

And much as I had decided to stay in Mumbai for a few months to put my film-production plans in place, there was no way I could get away from this engagement…and you know what?

I don't regret it one bit. Paris is exhilarating any time. And more so now when the company is so exciting."

Shilpa says she loved Sofia, Maggie and Dita's enthusiasm for India.

"When I come abroad I feel a tangible change in the attitude to our country. If I've been even a tiny part of that change, I feel good. What I can't come to terms with is the different ways of greeting in different parts of Europe.

In Brussels you've to plant three kisses, while elsewhere it's just two. It's very difficult to keep track of how many kisses is correct in which city. Maybe I should keep a 'cheek' list."

Lauging loudly she bids adieu to mingle with super-celebrities.

But not before declaring, "I long to get back home.I've been traveling so much I think home-sickness was invented for me."

Shilpa returns later this week.

Celina Jaitley is all set to stage her grand come back with Ganesh Acharaya directed film, 'Money Hai To Honey Hai', after having disappeared from the scene for some time with her International project 'Love Has No Language'.

When I meet her for this interview at her spacious, but well decorated house in the suburbs, Celina talks in length about the film, and says that it is a story of six friends, who are strugglers in their own respective fields.

"I play a fashion designer, Shruti Pandey who has graduated from NIFT and yet struggles while trying to sell a pattern of her own to export houses", Celina quips at the outset.

The film "Money Hai To Honey Hai", Celina states, sets out to drive home the subtle message that today's education system really sucks and how.

"It is a comical representation of today's education system and stars besides me, stars like Govinda, Aftab Shivdasani, Upen Patel, Manoj Bajpai, Ravi Kishen and Hansika Motwani. Each of us has a different background as a struggler in the film".

Yet another film with which Celina is quite excited is Subhash Ghai's 'Hello Darling' in which she plays a young catholic girl called Candy Fernandes. "Candy is a little dumb when people try to talk in double language to her.

The film dwells at length about how it is wrong on the part of people in society today to judge a woman on the basis of what she is wearing. It is a chic film and I enjoyed working with Isha Koppikar and Gul Panag", says Celina.

The actress then hastens to clarify, "Just because there are three women in Hello Darling like there were in Charlie's Angels, it does not mean that you should jump to the conclusion that Hello Darling is a rehash of Charlie's Angels".

Celina states that she can identify herself with the role in Hello Darling completely.

"People feel that I am anglicized and cannot talk in Hindi when the fact is that I am from a Hindi medium school background and very good in Sanskrit and Hindi.

I may flaunt blood costumes on the screen, but am conservative at heart and a very simple and down to earth girl who is rooted to the family".

Celina is happy that she gets to play a comic role in Golmaal Returns. "I am a young well educated girl who is doing her graduation in Microbiology.

Just as Kareena Kapoor's character is named Ekta Kapoor, my character is named Mira Nair, though it has got nothing to do with filmmaker Mira Nair. I have been teamed opposite Shreyas Talpade in the film.

The best thing about Shreyas and me is that we have very good timing to carry off the comedy scenes. I have been a great fan of Sridevi as far as comedy roles are concerned", states Celina.

Celina confesses that she realized that she had a comic streak to her as an actress when she acted in 'No Entry' in which she had a zany comic role.

"After No Entry, I have done a spate of comedy films like Apna Sapna Money Money, Tom Dick & Harry, Money Hai To Honey Hai and now Golmaal Returns"

After Apna Sapna Money Money and Hello Darling, Celina has been repeated in Paying Guest by Mukta Arts. "I am lucky to have been singled out by Ghaisaab for a third film in his production company.

I play a cry baby architect in 'Paying Guest' which by the way is being directed by Paritosh Painter. I have been a fan of Paritosh who comes up with excellent plays.

Besides the Mukta Arts, I have also been signed for a three- film contract by Kumar Mangat, Ashtavinayak and Suneel Darshan"

Celina is quite excited about her recent foray to the West with a film called 'Love Has No Language' directed by Ken Khan.

"I play an Indian Bengali girl brought up in New Zealand. My parents played by Kiran Kumar and Rati Agnihotri are very orthodox and want me to marry an Indian boy of their choice, whereas I am in love with a Kiwi boy.

I am kiwi by nature and hence am stuck between my family and the boy played by Ben Mitchell. with whom I am in love with. It is a modern story"

It is interesting to note that Celina was slated to act in yet another English film called 'Quest of Shehzada'. "However because of the writer's Strike abroad, the film has been kept on hold and the shooting is yet to start.

Though the director is yet to be finalized, Orlando Bloom is being considered as an actor", she states as she concludes. Jyothi Venkatesh

Katrina Kaif - Interview

www.diddlelive.co.cc

As far as actresses went, one can safely say 2007 belonged to the ethereal Katrina Kaif, at least when it came to visibility. The pretty actress turned her career around last year, giving as many as four hits. It all began with the romantic comedy Namastey London, then extended to another comedy Partner, a Deol family drama Apne and then the multi-starrer laugh riot Welcome. The leggy actress managed to get enough eyeballs to bag her some top projects for the next couple of years, including a three-film deal with Studio 18. What's more, Katrina made detractors eat their words with four hit films last year. A tête-à-tête with the pretty actress:

You had said before that you hoped Namastey London was the big break you were looking for. It was. How does it feel to have your dream come true?

Yes I had and it feels great. Namastey London provided that turning point my career needed. It did me a world of good. But I am hoping it was not the only turning point for me. I sure hope there are many such breaks ahead, which will help me get bigger and better films and achieve the success I want to.

How did Namastey London change things for you?

Well I think the biggest change was in the way the industry looked at me. Yes, I did other films like Apne and Partner but my role in Namastey London was the one that got me the recognition I deserve. It felt nice to be appreciated by people in the industry as they are the ones I will be working with. So it's important they recognize my work and give me more opportunities. I now get much better offers and roles. Even the people who did not think I was a good enough performer are now getting in touch with me.

Partner and Welcome also did very well at the box office. Did the box office earnings translate into a boost for your career?
They were commercial entertainers and this industry is largely driven by commercial films. As an actress, I have to be in commercial films too to be seen and heard. These are the films that are released with 1,000 prints and a cross-section of the audiences sees them. That is not to say that performance-oriented films are not important. I think an actor needs to strike the right balance between performance-driven films and commercial flicks. You need both. Fortunately for me, Namastey London was a commercial film but it gave me a chance to perform too. But you don't get such films always. They are few and far in between.

So are you going to stick to mainstream Bollywood? Or experiment with parallel cinema too?
I don't want to fall in any categories yet. I just want to do films that will give me a platform to show my talent. I am searching for roles and characters I relate to. Also, after doing a few films, I have begun to understand what roles suit me and what don't. As soon as I hear a script now, I can tell if that character is me or not. If I cannot see myself doing that role, I opt out.

So have you gained a better understanding of what kind of films work for you?
I think when it comes to the salability of a film, I have learnt to figure out what will work at the box office and what won't. I now have a fair understanding of scripts and other aspects that make a winner. But it's hard to predict accurately each time. Sometimes, some films work despite not having the winning formula and sometimes, obvious winners fall flat. That's showbiz for you.

You earlier said Bollywood hasn't accepted you completely. Do you think that has changed now?
Well, I would say there is a lot more acceptance now than there was earlier. I don't know about the performance-oriented circles but at least when it comes to commercial films, I feel more accepted. It's encouraging when people recognize your potential.

Your pairing with Akshay Kumar has been pretty successful and the two of you have been cast in several films. He's been doing very well lately. Do you think his popularity has rubbed off on you?
I am happy that people like to see us together. We do make a good pair on-screen and I would say we share good chemistry. But we are very different from each other in reality. Maybe that's why our pairing works. As for the second part of your question, a hit helps everyone involved in it. His popularity does rub off on me and it's the same for any star. The success of Partner and Namastey London too helped everyone involved in the projects.

International WOMEN'S DAY and Bollywood 'divas'

Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network

From 2007 to 2008 lots of water has flown and along with the flow have emerged female actors from India who have carved out a niche for themselves at the international arena and have by their presence and their executions of multi-dimensional roles have opened a window to the world about the prowess that they possess. For this sheer reason celebrations of International Women's Day needs to also focus into contribution of the Indian female actors who have in their own manner brought about subtle change in the way the cinema is being interpreted and have also induced changes in the business of cinema making to take into account nuances from the sub-continent. The initiatives of these actors made Angelina Joile remark in an interview to the Newsweek, that had she not been provided an exposure to the professionals associated with cinema from the sub-continent she would not have been aware what fantastic conglomerate exists in the sub-continent.

The front leaders from the sub-continent who have made the country proud by acting in the international films associated with the cause of women include Aishwarya Rai, Shilpa Shetty and Tabu. Tabu's film THE NAMESAKE would be one of the rare films that got an international release at the same time along with the release in India and it earned rave reviews for her all over. Aishwarya Rai's different films that released during the year have also paved the way for her to be selected for a film of large canvas like THE PINK PANTHER. Shilpa Shetty with her calm and serene approach in the BIG BOSS show drove home the importance of the Indian culture and drew such a fan following that she became the winner of BIG BOSS.

Preity Zinta in the same manner has in her own way carved a niche for herself and is using her image to work for the causes that could have an impact on the society and has also emerged as an entrepreneur to own a premier cricket league club. This would not have been possible but for the platform that films provided to Preity Zinta to carve a special niche for her and the image that she has developed for herself which speaks strongly about the persona of a woman in a forceful manner.

During the last year it also has happened that new women directors have made their debut and have taken issues like lesbianism, issue of re-marriage of widowed woman in the commercial realm and the forefront in this category is Reema Lagti, while Farah Khan has single handedly brought the magic of cinema of grandeur and entertainment back to the Indian cinema and has emerged as a worthy successor to Manmohan Desai.

The sapling of empowerment of women through cinema has been planted and these brand ambassadors of women empowerment are serving as a model and guide for their sisters all over the country and outside as well, and in the years to come cinema would provide more defined contours to the cause of women empowerment.
